Soil of château La Vernède in Nissan lez Ensérune

The 'pechs' or hills of Nissan Lez Ensérune rise halfway between Narbonne in the Aude and Béziers in the Hérault.

The La Vernède Estate in itself makes up 40% of the area covered by the "Coteaux du Languedoc" appellation d'origine contrôlée within the commune of Nissan lez Ensérune. The vines are planted on chalky-clay soil, situated between scrubland and pine forests on the mountainsides with the greatest exposure.

These southern-facing slopes opposite the Massif de La Clape benefit from the marin, the summer breeze that sweeps in from the Mediterranean just a few kilometres away.

The AOP grapes were chosen as part of a rigorous process: Syrah, Grenache noir, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan for the reds; Grenache blanc and Roussane for the whites. The vine is today cultivated and maintained sustainably over an area of 60 hectares.

Visits at Château La Vernède

Although the Château is not open for visiting, visits can be made of the Roman remains, the park, with its fairly unique variety of ancient trees, and the kitchen garden, with its beautiful greenhouse dating from 1901. Some of the two and a half hectares of buildings open for visiting are the mule stables, the saddle-horse stables, the saddlery and the forge. Château La Vernède is however first and foremost a winemaking estate.

We would therefore be delighted to show you around the wine-making cellar (one of the largest private cellars in the region, with a capacity of 30,000 hectolitres spread out over 1,800 m²), the ageing storehouses and the tasting chamber, in which several archaeological finds are displayed together with a press from the turn of the 15th Century.

Visits and tastings are free. Visit us and browse our whole range of wines to choose one that suits your mood, or even better, give in to the temptation of a whole selection.
